One of the manufacturers that has already demonstrated an under-screen camera smartphone several times is Xiaomi. The company says it has arrived at generation 3.0. However, there is still no Xiaomi smartphone available with an under-display camera. This Chinese manufacturer now seems to be investigating the possibilities of incorporating the front camera under the screen.
On June 2 and 3, 2021, Xiaomi was granted a patent by the European Patent Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent was filed a year earlier. The 14-page documentation entitled ‘Camera lens behind the display of a mobile terminal connected to the front side by a light guide’ describes a Xiaomi smartphone in which the selfie camera is integrated into the screen edge.
A transparent area is used to process the camera in the screen edge. Thus, incoming light can pass through the display panel onto the camera lens. Optical fibers are used for the light-transmitting element, alternatively a prism could also be used.
A clear advantage of this type of camera system is that there are no holes or notches visible. Although a punch-hole camera is experienced by many as less disturbing than a notch, it is still clearly visible.
Moreover, this technology would be cheaper than a punch-hole camera – as OnePlus described in its patent at the beginning of this year. A year earlier, sister company Oppo also showed a similar smartphone design, in which the selfie camera was incorporated into the screen edge. All in all, it is certainly not inconceivable that phone models with such a selfie camera will be released in the future.
