Xiaomi, Huawei, and Tencent selected as Derwent Top 100 Global Innovators 2020

On February 19, the global professional information service provider Clarivate released the report of ‘Derwent Top 100 Global Innovators™ 2020’. The report selects the world’s most innovative institutions based on indicators such as the number of invention patents, quality, results impact, and global protection. Xiaomi has been selected for this list for the second time due to the rapid growth of patent applications in recent years.

Apart from Xiaomi, only three Chinese companies have been selected for the list this year, including Xiaomi, Huawei, and Tencent. Tencent appeared on the list for the first time this year. The three companies represent the top achievements of Chinese companies in the three patent fields. Together with Huawei and Tencent, Xiaomi has achieved the world’s top innovation level.

It is worth noting that in the industry distribution of the listed institutions, the hardware and electronics industry ranked first in the industry with 38 listed institutions, an increase of 3 from last year. The manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries are followed by 16 institutions, and the telecommunications and software industries each have 8 institutions.

According to CoreWings, the institutions selected on the list have obtained at least 100 invention patents in the past five years (and the total number of applications is not less than 500). Innovation results must have sufficient downstream influence and be frequently cited by other agencies. At the same time, it must have a global patent operation.

According to CREE, the listed institutions have made outstanding achievements in technological innovation and patent protection. At the same time, these patents have extensive market coverage and numerous opportunities for derivative inventions, and have broad commercial prospects.
