Samsung Electronics researchers have develop a new method to extend the life and efficiency of quantum dot light emitting diodes (QLEDs).

The research team led by Samsung researcher Dr. Eunjoo Jang and chief researcher of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology Dr. Yu-Ho Won has improve the structure of quantum dots. They are made of environmentally friendly indium phosphide. Their research is mainly to reduce the loss of central energy and accelerate the absorption of current. The research results show that the efficiency of QLED has been improve by 21.4%. The lifetime has been extended to 1 million hours.

Most QLED research uses cadmium as the light source, because cadmium has extraordinary ductility and integrity. It has the best performance, but the problem is that cadmium is toxic. While indium phosphide is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Therefore, the use of indium phosphide is another important achievement they have achieved.

Compare with organic light-emitting materials used in organic light-emitting diodes (OLDE). Quantum dot-based diodes have purer colors, longer life, lower manufacturing costs, and lower power consumption.

Although researchers aren’t sure if they can commercialize self-luminous QLED displays. This technology could become a decisive part of future flagship TVs and displays.

Samsung’s Goal:

If Samsung’s ultimate goal is to launch a self-illuminating QLED display. It will not be until at least 2025 to see its feasibility.

In October this year, Samsung Display announce that it will invest $ 11 billion in the production of quantum dot (QD) displays by 2025. The company says in a statement that the focus of the $ 11 billion investment is to transform an LCD production line in South Korea. Into a facility for mass production of more advanced “quantum dot” displays.

TFT-LCD, AMOLED, and new display technologies, including flexible displays, are based on semiconductor technology. They can be collectively refer as semiconductor displays. A semiconductor display can be define as a collective term for a display technology. That independently controls each smallest display unit through a semiconductor device.
